The school
- The CIMPA Research Summer School on Mathematical models applied to molecular dynamics and oncology will take place in Santiago de Cuba from 3 to 14 May 2021, in the Rectorado de la Universidad de Oriente. It is part of the summer courses funded by CIMPA.
- Applications for financial support from CIMPA are open until January 31th, 2020, and registration is open until February 28th, 2020.
- The poster for the school can be downloaded here. Please feel free to use it for publicising the school.
Scientific topics
- Tumor growth and its interaction with the immune system continue and will continue to challenge oncologists. The pace of progress has often been slow, in part because of the time required to evaluate new therapies. To reduce the time to approval, new paradigms for assessing therapeutic efficacy are needed. This requires the intellectual energy of scientists working in the field of mathematics and physics, collaborating closely with biologists and physicians. This essentially means that the heuristic experimental approach, which is the traditional investigative method in the biological sciences, should be complemented by a mathematical modeling approach. Advance in mathematical modeling and the last most significant progress in this domain need to be exchanged and developed with Cuba and other countries of the Latin America and Caribbean areas. This school is addressed for researchers, doctoral students, students of Master’s degree level and talented undergraduate students to acquire a basic training in the field of mathematics applied to medicine. This school will cover a wide class of mathematical models and applications in issues related to tumor growth, population dynamics, pattern formation and their implications in developmental cancer biology.

If you are interested in attending the school we request that you register by email. Registration is handled separately for Cuban and non-Cuban students:
- If you are a member of a Cuban institution, please contact berguesc@yahoo.com.
- Otherwise, please register by sending an email to emf@unizar.es.
Any attendant to CIMPA 2020 must provide the following information when registering
- Name:
- Affiliation:
- Email:
- Please attach also a short CV
In addition, all the attendants must provide, when their travel schedule is decided, a filled form with aditional information about their travel. The filled document must be sent by e-mail to Luis Bergues (berguesc@yahoo.com) with copy to Dania Terán (daniat@uo.edu.cu) before April 1st 2020 (30 days before the beginning of the school). Important note: This filled form is required to participate in CIMPA-2020.
Attendance financial support
There is the possibility of requesting financial support from CIMPA: "All persons, except the lecturers, wishing to attend a CIMPA School are requested to register on the local web site of the school. People who require support to cover their costs of participation (travel and/or living expenses) can apply for a financial support from CIMPA on the web page: http://students.cimpa.info
Only the students and research teaching staff of an institution located in a developing country different from the country of the school are eligible to a financial support from CIMPA. Applications must be submitted before the deadline which is given on the CIMPA webpage of the school. Applications shall include a cover letter and two recommendation letters that will be sent electronically by the referees. Candidates are advised to complete their applications early enough and to ask the referees to send the letters long before the deadline. CIMPA will not assume responsibility for any last-minute application which cannot be completed due to technical reasons."

All services regarding hotel reservations different from the Hotel Las Américas, transfers hotel/airport, flights inside Cuba and touristic packages can be done through CUBANACAN. They will offer negotiated prices for the participants at the school. The contacts are Lic. Debora Bell (Tel: 53-22-642202; 53-22-643445, e-mail: director@avc.scu.tur.cu) and Yetsy Lezcano (Tel: 53-22-642202, e-mail: comercial@avc.scu.tur.cu).
Airlines arriving to Santiago de Cuba:
Cubana de Aviación arrives to Santiago from Madrid (Tuesdays), Rome (Thursdays) and Paris (Sundays). There are charter companies like Blue Panorama that offer travels to Santiago de Cuba. There are plenty of options to fly to Havana and then connect there with Cubana de Aviación. There are charter flights from London Gatwick to Holguin by Condor, then you have to travel by bus to Santiago de Cuba. students from latinamerica and southamerica can travel with COPA. There is a direct fly from Panama to Holguin (wednesday and saturday). Holguin is only two hours from Santiago de Cuba.
Visa:
All participants can visit Cuba with touristic visas. However, it is very important that once you received the acceptance or you fix your travel details, you send to Luis Bergues (berguesc@yahoo.com) the following filled form.
