The IUMA
The Institute of Mathematics and Applications (IUMA), University of Zaragoza, was created by Order of March 1, 2007 the Department of Science, Technology and University of the Government of Aragon (BOA 16/03/07). Research in the field of mathematics and its applications is among the main objectives of IUMA, together with bringing Mathematics closer to the Society in general, to students of Secondary Education and to the industrial, technological and business world, contributing in this way to the economic and cultural development of the Autonomous Community of Aragon.
At present, the IUMA consists of professors with recognized research experience, belonging to 6 research groups recognized by the Government of Aragon. FPI and FPU Scholars conducting the thesis under the supervision of a member of IUMA are non-permanent members of the same.
MISSION and VISION
The mission of the IUMA is to organize, promote and improve the research of Mathematics and its applications in Aragon and promote its internationalization.
The vision of the IUMA is to be a reference center in Mathematics and its applications at international level, promoting quality and prestige research, strongly support the research groups in mathematics recognized by the Government of Aragon and foster synergies with each other and with other national or international research groups, as well as promoting interdisciplinary with the scientific, technological, industrial, health, etc. sectors that could require assistance from Mathematics.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
- Improve the quality of Aragon's mathematical research and achieve leadership in its areas of specialization.
- Increase the internal projection of our research, through collaboration with other existing or future Research Institutes, Centers and Departments.
- Increase the external projection of our research, through participation in national and international research networks, collaboration with other groups in international R + D + I projects, etc.
- Collaborate with companies -preferably in Aragon, though not exclusively- in the development of mathematical models and participation in consultancies of different nature.
- Facilitate that less competitive groups or areas raise their quality level.
- Provide an adequate framework for the incorporation of quality researchers in calls for “Ramón y Cajal”, “ARAID”, “Juan de la Cierva” ...
- Improve the social projection of Mathematics both in the second-level education and, in general, in the society through the periodic realization of outreach activities.
PARTICULAR OBJECTIVES
- To organize, promote and improve the research of Mathematics and its applications, seeking the higher quality and prestige, through a center of excellence that serves as a reference both nationally and internationally in the specialty.
- To provide institutional and administrative support to researchers in the organization of activities related to research (advanced courses, seminars, congresses) with the maximum use of available resources.
- To coordinate and organize with other institutions courses and specialized courses, for example, development of doctoral programs or postgraduate courses, both subsidised and unsubsidised.
- To exploit the multidisciplinarity of the reference groups of the Institute recognized by the Government of Aragon and coordinate joint research activities.
- To promote and orient new lines and research projects, especially in interdisciplinary topics or of interest to the Autonomous Community, where the mathematical models are applied.
- To encourage the research collaboration with existing and future institutes for the promotion of joint plans that foster the synergy of the institutions.
- To improve the international projection of Mathematics research at the University of Zaragoza.
- To be an International Meeting Center in mathematical research, through the periodic organization of workshops, congresses, conferences ... of scientific nature.
- To improve the social projection of Mathematics, promoting the pleasure and interest of the second-level students for them and for the sciences in general.
- To disseminate to society the importance of mathematics for the training of the population in new technologies.
- To make mathematical research accessible to society and the industrial fabric of the autonomous community through program contracts with companies to solve the problems that they demand.
- To design and teach postgraduate courses allowing the professionals of the companies, administration, etc., to update on the new techniques, theories and mathematical methods to be applied in the field of their work activity, facilitating in this way a continuous professional training.
- To create the appropriate atmosphere for the promotion of spin-off companies in new technologies, founded by former PhD students from the Institute.
