“Exploring Teacher–Parent Partnerships with Underrepresented Groups in Mathematics Education"
Abstract:
In this presentation I will be reporting on research conducted with teachers in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, as well as reflecting on the research process and expanding on the lessons that can be learned about how to ethically and responsively enter contexts as a researcher. In this research,
We explored their practices and experiences as they worked to strengthen relationships with parents and guardians to support the continuation of school mathematics learning in the home during Covid-19. The research findings showed encouraging indications that the strong deficit perspectives of the home environment that teachers had held started to shift as a result of these efforts. During the course of the research, as researchers, we experienced many limitations due to our identities as outsiders of the culture of the families in this community. I will explore what it requires to research within a context from the position of an outsider, and a newcomer, in relation to working with communities in both South Africa and New Zealand. In both contexts my work involves engaging with groups who can be considered to be vulnerable, marginalised and underrepresented, and this requires specific forms of engagement and a commitment to developing relationships of trust. I will explore what I have learned when researching in South Africa, and will connect this to what I am learning in my research work in New Zealand, and will discuss what these lessons might mean for researchers in education more broadly.
